The Choirs of St. Rita

“St. Augustine taught the people of Hippo: ‘Cantare amantis est.’ Singing is characteristic of a lover. If the supreme love is, as we believe, between Christ, the Bridegroom, and the Church, his Bride—can any effort be spared to express this love in true beauty? Is any sacrifice too much?”
-Fr. Samuel Weber

Saint Rita is fortunate to have choirs of differing styles and ages whose primary purpose is to lead and enhance the music at the weekend liturgies. Please take a moment to see how you can join our vital ministry.

The Choirs of St. Rita

Saint Rita Choir
This choir sings weekly for the 10:45a.m. Sunday liturgy. Membership is open to all those who enjoy singing the choral literature of the Church from past to present. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30. Some additional rehearsals on Saturday mornings are required to prepare for special programs. A placement hearing is required and music reading ability is a plus. The Saint Rita Choir also prepares annual concerts of major choral works with orchestra. A highlight of the coming year is a 12-day tour to Ireland in Summer 2011.
Dr. Alfred Calabrese, director

Schola Cantorum
The Schola is a choral ensemble of selected singers from the Saint Rita Choir specializing in chamber repertoire from all periods. Members of this group sing every other Sunday for the 9:00a.m. liturgy in addition to their participation in one of the other choirs. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 7:30. Members of the Schola are selected by audition only.
Dr. Alfred Calabrese, director

Saint Rita Contemporary Choir
This group of singers and instrumentalists focuses primarily on music in the contemporary style and leads the music for the 5:30p.m. Sunday liturgy. All who are interested in offering their musical talent are welcome to join. Rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoons from 3:45 tp 5:15.
Terry and Merrilyn Eder, co-directors

Saint Rita Bilingual Choir
This diverse group rejoices in a blend of traditional and contemporary Hispanic music, and serves the 12:30p.m. bilingual Mass each Sunday. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 tp 9:00p.m.
Cesar Anguiano, director

Resurrection Choir
The Resurrection Choir gathers to offer support, comfort, and musical leadership during funeral liturgies. Singers come together as they are able for a brief rehearsal period just prior to the service.
Wesley Beal, director

Cantors’ Guild
The Cantors of St. Rita do not constitute a Choir; however, they do provide invaluable musical leadership at Saturday evening, Sunday, and Holy Day liturgies. Requirements include a pleasant singing voice, excellent music reading ability, and a willingness to prepare music on one's own. Previous voice study and flexibility of schedule are helpful. Cantors must also be highly dependable. Membership in an adult choir is preferred.
Alfred Calabrese, director
